The protagonist is a narcissist who may have learned something by the end of the story, but the reader is thoroughly sick of him by then. James' tiresome and lengthy sentences make the whole thing worse.
Typical Henry James short story or novella
Yes, I'm rating this piece of classic literature as a 1-star book. James uses several pages to convey what could be said in a few sentences. Granted, I am a fan of brevity, as I view wordiness as a sign of a lacking plot.
If you are a fan of Fitzgerald you may enjoy this story, but if you are more of a Hemingway fan, you may find the writing too arduous.
A well written account of an incredible man's journey to the brink of endurance and back. Not a journey for the faint of heart. Excellent read!
The best short story that I have ever read.
Challenging diction but James throughly analyzes the dilemma of the young man and his relationship to both the beast and his girl friend.
A great not-so-short story by James. I would have enjoyed it more without the typos and formatting issues in the edition.
