This is the first novel I have read by F.J. Stevens and I have to say I am truly impressed with the author's ability to engross the reader into the mindset and the dilemmas that each of the characters faced in the book. Not only did the author effectively incorporate DC culture and dialect into the book, but she also provides a true mental illustration of what it is like to be born into a lifestyle or family structure that is already equipped with its own unique and cultural challenges and influences. As soon as the reader feels safe that the characters have figured things out, another event causes the character to have to figure out a new plan of action. Issues such as drugs, sex, blended families, single parenting, crime, poverty, trust, greed, revenge, morality, law, love, loss, forgiveness, family secrets, facades and loyalty all play an important part in this book. The book also gives a true depiction of how urban neighborhoods function, thrive and why some people choose to live among their hopeless circumstances and others do everything in their power to get out and never come back. The decisions that the James Girls must make are not easy and at times their circumstances truly have you wondering what you would do in the same situation. The book had a wonderful flow, the characters were well written and the two main characters were everything you'd expect two sisters to be - polar opposites. Whether you relate to either of the James Girls, the book will have you picking sides, patting them on the back, mentally screaming at them and smacking your teeth with a "sister girl" attitude. I appreciated the raw, gritty language and the true-to-DC nature of the book. If you are from the DC/MD/VA (DMV) area, you will need to explain to people why you are smiling and grinning while reading as the culture is truly felt in the book. The end will leave you wondering what the sisters will get into (or out of) in the sequel. Definitely could not put it down!Product details

James Girls edition by FJ Stevens Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I love love love this book! So unpredictable. I can't wait for the next one.
This book part 1 was very awesome, I would recommend this book to anyone to read, I'm ready to begin part2 of this amazing book.
This is a wonderful read for those of us who have been out of touch the millennial generation. I would recommend this book to any pastor trying to reach this population in today's society. It brings you into the mind of these individuals and how they process information in the challenging world in which they find themselves, dealing with life in this high tech-non-facial connectional way. Yet, seeking a personal connection with a since of suspicion about all their relationships. Check it out.. the James Girls... I've learned something..
I loved the real ness of the characters.. Ms Stevens captured the true essence of what Black family secrets do to our strong family units. The totally different ways we fight, and still love one another. Because family is all that matters..I can't wait for books 2-4 and the movies...God is going to bless you my friend...I thank God for your imagination and determination...
Reading while riding the DC Metro. This is definitely a page turner. Stevens’ character development is on point. I was totally submersed in the lives of Brenda and Missy; the highs and the lows, the triumphs and the failures..I felt as though I knew these women personally.
I really enjoyed this book! I was enticed with each chapter. Is there book 2 like omg i have to know what happens next!!
I liked the fact that this book keeps you Interested from the beginning to the end. What I could relate to in the book is the family dysfunction which I believe many families can relate to. What I disliked was how fast Brenda and het attorney became an item without really knowing each other outside of the case.
